lady bava by boston-joe lady bava by boston-joe
this was my submission for this weeks theme over at the "brand new nostalgia" blog. this time around, :icontradd: chose "monsters".

i thought of 2 options:

1) pick a harryhausen monster
or
2) pick a mignola monster

so i picked a whale in a mechanical body. this character slightly edged out the stop motion creations of harryhausen. some of mignola's best monsters exist outside of the hellboy universe.

this character showed up in a backup story in an issue of ted mckeever's "metropol" (issue 9, 1991). mike shared with me yesterday that "ted's script was 8 pages, but 3 of those pages were just describing the lady bava character".

Oh! i like the whole shading/contrasts you did there and the concept itself.
Very nice with all the details as well, and everything done just with a black pack. VERY good :D

I saw you posted this on Mike's page. Did he get back to you yet? I love how you worked in subtle hatching, yet it doesnt look out of place. Great work Bud!

he did. he said he couldnt really take credit for designing it, considering how much info ted had given him in the script on what the creature should look like.

as for the hatching, its not something i really do, but it was part of the inking style he had used back in 1991 when he drew the character.

oh, i dont know. he's said some nice things at conventions, and eric powell even assured me that mike wouldn't hold back if he actually disliked my work.
